Carnival Bans Upside-Down Pineapple Decorations
Carnival Cruise Line has announced that it will no longer allow upside-down pineapples as decorations on stateroom doors. This decision comes after growing concerns about the symbol’s association with certain adult-themed behavior.
Traditionally, pineapples have been a symbol of hospitality, but the upside-down version of the fruit has a more controversial connotation. It is often used to signify that a home, or in this case, a cabin, is occupied by individuals who engage in swinging or partner swapping activities. This symbol has become well-known within certain social circles but is considered inappropriate for public spaces, including cruise ships.
The issue was first raised through Carnival’s app, where a user inquired about organizing single cruiser meetups on board. Although singles events were once popular on cruise ships, they have declined in recent years, possibly due to the rise of dating apps. This prompted Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, to confirm that upside-down pineapple decorations are now prohibited on stateroom doors and will be removed.
This is part of a broader set of guidelines Carnival Cruise Line has established for stateroom decorations. The cruise line has outlined several rules to ensure that all door decorations are safe, appropriate, and compliant with onboard policies. These rules include:
- Decorations must be made of fire-retardant materials only.
- Decorations are allowed only on the stateroom door, not the surrounding frame, walls, or railings.
- Magnets or Command Strips may be used for decorations, but tape or glue are prohibited.
- Over-the-door hanging organizers must hang inside the stateroom and must not damage the door.
- Decorations or items are not permitted on balconies.
- No items can be placed over light fittings or fixtures, as this can restrict airflow and pose a fire risk.
- String lights are not permitted for safety reasons.
Carnival Cruise Line emphasizes that decorations purchased through their Fun Shops are made of fire-retardant materials, adhering to safety standards. The line’s focus on safety and appropriateness is reflected in its strict rules around stateroom decorations, ensuring a comfortable and secure environment for all guests.
By banning upside-down pineapples and enforcing these decoration rules, Carnival aims to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere on board while preventing misunderstandings or discomfort among passengers. This move also reflects the cruise line’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all travelers.
