Qatar, JALCARGO Forge Enhanced Cargo Partnership
Qatar Airways Cargo and Japan Airlines’ cargo division, JALCARGO, have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at providing enhanced service offerings to their respective airfreight customers. This strategic agreement, announced on December 4, 2024, paves the way for more seamless cargo transfers, optimized network integration, and stronger trade links between the regions served by both airlines.
The MoU marks a significant milestone in the partnership between two major players in the global air cargo industry. Qatar Airways Cargo, renowned for its extensive network spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond, brings to the table robust connectivity options and state-of-the-art facilities at its Doha hub. Meanwhile, JALCARGO, the dedicated freighter wing of Japan Airlines, is well-positioned to support increased trade flows through its Tokyo hub. Together, the carriers aim to streamline operations and simplify the movement of goods across continents, thereby improving service quality and reliability for freight customers.
This collaboration is expected to create substantial economic value by facilitating the flow of cargo between diverse markets. According to recent figures, the two carriers moved a combined 4,462 tons of import and export cargo in Japan over the past year. This volume underscores the potential impact of the new agreement, which seeks to tap into rising demand for efficient freight solutions between Japan and destinations covered by Qatar Airways Cargo’s far-reaching network.
The MoU will further enhance product offerings, aligning the carriers’ respective strengths. By integrating their networks, customers can benefit from improved transit times, greater capacity availability, and a broader selection of routes. This level of coordination will be particularly advantageous for shippers looking to reach emerging markets or niche destinations that were previously harder to access through a single carrier’s services.
Qatar Airways Cargo Chief Officer Cargo, Mark Drusch, emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating: “This MoU symbolizes a commitment to a deeper partnership, aiming to integrate both networks via the hubs in Doha and Tokyo. This will enhance network connectivity and product offerings for customers, linking Japan to Qatar Airways’ extensive network in Europe, the Middle East, the Levant, and Africa, and vice versa.”
Japan Airlines has also been strengthening its cargo capabilities. After a 13-year hiatus, the carrier recently reinstated dedicated freighter operations using a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Yuichiro Kitof, Executive Officer, Senior Vice President and Head of Cargo & Mail at Japan Airlines, highlighted the agreement’s significance, saying, “This agreement further strengthens the long-standing partnership between JAL and Qatar Airways Cargo. Through this agreement, JALCARGO will leverage JAL’s passenger flights, freighter network, and the newly expanded Qatar Airways network to deliver customers’ cargo to an even broader range of destinations than ever before.”
Looking ahead, the partnership will be further enhanced in the coming year, as Qatar Airways Cargo plans to introduce freighter services connecting its Doha hub with Tokyo-Narita International Airport. This move stands to bolster the alliance’s ability to meet the evolving needs of global shippers, ensuring efficient, reliable, and wide-ranging cargo solutions for businesses worldwide.
