German VIP A350 Fleet Gains High-Tech Self-Defense
Germany has become the first nation worldwide to equip Airbus A350 aircraft for governmental VIP transport—akin to the United States’ “Air Force One” program. The country’s three A350s, operated by the Bundeswehr, are tasked with carrying top government officials, including the chancellor and ministers, on critical diplomatic missions. Recently, German authorities confirmed that these aircraft will undergo installations of Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) to protect against infrared-guided missiles, reflecting heightened global security concerns and a commitment to safeguarding key personnel.
Originally, the German government chose not to include self-protection countermeasures on the A350s, citing cost considerations and the desire to keep the aircraft in constant rotation. However, as geopolitical tensions worsened throughout 2024, officials reversed course. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius underscored the importance of these upgrades by noting that ensuring the safety of passengers and crew on long-haul flights is paramount. This decision brings the A350s in line with other Bundeswehr aircraft, such as the A400M, which already employ advanced defensive measures.
How DIRCM Works
The newly chosen self-defense system, called J-MUSIC, is a DIRCM technology developed by Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems. DIRCM relies on laser-based countermeasures to thwart incoming missiles equipped with infrared seeker heads. These weapons, often referred to as Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS), can be launched from the shoulder, making them a particular threat in conflict-prone regions. When the DIRCM system detects a missile homing in on the aircraft’s heat signature, it fires a laser beam to jam the seeker, causing the missile to lose track of its intended target.
Elbit’s J-MUSIC has already been deployed on a range of military platforms worldwide, including Embraer KC-390s and multiple A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transports (MRTTs). Germany also uses the J-MUSIC system on its A400Ms, ensuring a consistent defense strategy across various airframes. Thanks to DIRCM technology’s proven success, officials believe it will offer a robust safeguard for the German A350 VIP fleet.
Installation and Maintenance
All modifications will be handled by Lufthansa Technik, which has been responsible for maintaining the German Special Air Mission Wing’s fleet since 1959. Lufthansa Technik will perform the installations in stages, aligning them with scheduled maintenance visits to avoid unnecessary downtime. Rather than grounding all three aircraft simultaneously, each A350 will be fitted with DIRCM one at a time over the next five years. This phased approach ensures Germany’s VIP transport capabilities remain continuous.
The adaptation of an Airbus A350 for self-defense is unprecedented in commercial aviation. Israel’s EL AL and other Israeli carriers do operate civilian aircraft with similar protection measures—known as C-MUSIC—but Germany’s decision marks the first time an A350 has undergone such enhancements.

By reinforcing its VIP fleet with state-of-the-art countermeasures, Berlin signals its resolve to protect leadership figures and continue diplomatic engagements unimpeded. With the first retrofit already underway, these enhanced A350s will soon demonstrate that, even in the evolving landscape of global aviation risks, Germany’s top-tier government transport is prepared to meet the challenge head-on.
