Fiji Airways Expands Domestic Fleet
Fiji Airways has significantly strengthened its domestic network by adding two new ATR 72-600 aircraft to its fleet. The arrival of these turboprop jets marks an important milestone for the airline as it works to boost connectivity across Fiji and the broader South Pacific region. The first ATR 72-600 landed on December 29, 2024, with the second aircraft joining the fleet on January 5, 2025. This strategic fleet expansion is designed to improve domestic capacity and provide more frequent, efficient service for regional travelers, especially in Northern Fiji.
Each ATR 72-600 features a seating capacity of 68 passengers and is optimized for short-haul routes. Fiji Airways has stated that these aircraft will primarily serve regional routes, including key corridors that link the northern and western areas of Fiji. Enhanced connectivity on these routes is expected to support local communities and stimulate economic growth across the islands, ensuring that residents and visitors alike have better access to essential travel services.
The airline’s network strategy involves developing a strong domestic hub at Nadi International Airport (NAN), which serves as the gateway to Fiji for international travelers. By increasing domestic capacity, Fiji Airways aims to improve the flow of passengers from NAN to other airports within Fiji, such as Nausori International Airport (SUV) in Suva and Labasa Airport (LBS) in Labasa. With the new ATR aircraft in place, the carrier plans to introduce additional services on these high-demand routes, which will facilitate smoother transfers and reduce overall travel times for passengers.
Fiji Airways CEO and Managing Director Andre Viljoen emphasized the significance of the fleet expansion in a recent statement. “These two new ATR aircraft are a significant investment in Fiji’s domestic connectivity. They are an important part of our commitment to providing comfortable and efficient travel options for our passengers and offering greater connectivity between our islands,” said Viljoen. He added, “This fleet expansion will also help us continue to meet the growing demand for domestic travel, ensuring that we can provide increased capacity where it’s needed most.”
The decision to add the ATR 72-600 jets comes at a time when domestic travel demand is surging, not only due to increased tourism but also because of local economic development initiatives. Many regional communities are benefitting from improved air links that make it easier to travel for business, education, and leisure. The modern ATR turboprops offer reliability and lower operating costs, which makes them an ideal solution for short-haul routes that connect smaller airports across the islands.
In addition to the fleet expansion, Fiji Link – the domestic and regional subsidiary of Fiji Airways – has recently unveiled new staff uniforms that align with the signature Fiji Airways look. This brand unification is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its identity and improve customer recognition across all divisions. The coordinated approach in branding not only enhances the overall customer experience but also reinforces the airline’s commitment to quality and consistency.
Overall, the addition of the two ATR 72-600 aircraft represents a key step in Fiji Airways’ ongoing efforts to enhance domestic connectivity and support its long-term growth strategy. By expanding its fleet and deepening its network, the carrier is positioning itself to better serve both international and domestic passengers while contributing to the continued development and economic vitality of the South Pacific region.
