UK Rail Sale Offers Millions of Discounted Tickets

Millions of train tickets will be discounted next week during a rail sale launched by the Department for Transport (DfT). More than two million Advance and Off-Peak tickets will be available between January 14 and 20 for travel across Britain from January 17 through March.

Discounted fares include routes like London to Newcastle reduced from £52.10 to £23.60, Nottingham to Manchester from £18.50 to £9.20, and Glasgow to Inverness from £28.10 to £14.10. Participating train operators exclude Hull Trains, Lumo, and Merseyrail.

The DfT highlighted the success of a similar scheme last year, which sold 600,000 tickets, saving passengers £5.8 million and generating £5.1 million in revenue. This year’s promotion is part of the rail industry’s efforts to offer greater affordability amid fare increases set for March 2. Regulated fares will rise by 4.6%, affecting season tickets and off-peak returns, with unregulated fares expected to increase similarly.

The sale coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first passenger train service. Jacqueline Starr, chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group, said the sale offers a great opportunity to celebrate this milestone while saving on travel.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander urged passengers to take advantage of the largest rail sale ever, offering significant discounts for leisure or visiting friends and family.

No announcements have been made regarding fare changes by the Scottish or Welsh governments.
