CEO Fears AI Could Replace His Job After Cutting Workforce

Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski, who recently championed AI for driving efficiency and reducing his company’s workforce by 22%, now fears the same technology could replace his role. Siemiatkowski previously highlighted AI’s impact, including its ability to perform tasks equivalent to “700 full-time agents,” as part of Klarna’s integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

While the fintech giant boasts a $14 billion valuation, its adoption of AI has sparked concerns about job security at all levels, including top executives. Siemiatkowski shared his apprehension on Twitter, writing, “AI is capable of doing all our jobs, my own included,” and acknowledged that realizing his job might become unnecessary feels “gloomy.”

Experts have long warned of AI’s potential to automate high-level roles. Former MIT AI Lab director Anant Agarwal suggested that 80% of a CEO’s tasks could be replaced by AI, though many believe leadership requires qualities like emotional intelligence and adaptability that AI cannot yet replicate.

Despite AI’s limitations, Siemiatkowski remains committed to its adoption. Klarna’s employees are increasingly utilizing AI, with promises of salary increases tied to efficiency gains. However, AI’s frequent inaccuracies and inability to handle nuanced decision-making still present barriers to fully automating executive roles.

As AI continues to evolve, Siemiatkowski believes it’s only a matter of time before the technology transforms work at every level, leaving businesses to navigate a balance between innovation and human expertise.
