VietJet Boosts Capacity for Busy Lunar New Year

Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet Air is ramping up its operations ahead of the highly anticipated Lunar New Year, a period marked by near-full bookings on domestic air services. In a series of strategic capacity enhancements, the airline has recently expanded its fleet with new additions aimed at meeting the soaring travel demand during Tet.

At the end of December 2024, VietJet Air welcomed two brand new Airbus A321neo Airbus Cabin Flex (ACF) aircraft into its fleet. This move marks a significant step as the carrier continues to modernize its operations and provide extra capacity for both domestic and international travel. Following this, on January 8, 2024, the airline further bolstered its fleet by adding four Airbus A320-200 aircraft. These additional aircraft have been wet-leased on an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) basis from Freebird Airlines and were deployed immediately on key routes.

VietJet Air announced via social media that the newly acquired A320-200 jets are actively serving a range of domestic and international routes, with a particular focus on the high-demand corridor connecting the northern and southern regions of Vietnam. This strategic move is timely, as the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam reported that domestic flight booking rates during the Lunar New Year often reach between 90% and 100%.

Freebird Airlines, the provider behind the wet-lease deal, is a seasoned operator founded in 2000 and registered in both Turkey and Malta. As a subsidiary of Gözen Holding—a conglomerate with over 40 years of experience in the aviation sector—Freebird Airlines is well-equipped to support VietJet Air’s peak-season needs with reliable aircraft and experienced crew.

The increased capacity comes at a crucial time when Vietnamese travelers are gearing up for Tet, the country’s most celebrated holiday. The surge in demand over the Lunar New Year period has long posed a challenge for airlines in Vietnam, with domestic travel experiencing record-high booking rates. With these fleet enhancements, VietJet Air is set to not only accommodate the high passenger volumes during Tet but also ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience across its network.

These capacity expansions are part of VietJet Air’s broader growth strategy, which focuses on modernizing its fleet to maintain competitiveness in an increasingly crowded low-cost market. By adding newer aircraft such as the Airbus A321neo and A320-200s, the carrier aims to improve fuel efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and offer passengers a more comfortable flying experience.
