While northern states shovel away snow, Hawaii basks under warm sunshine and a temperate climate, inviting travelers to experience the true spirit of Aloha. During the winter holidays, a recent cruise aboard the Ruby Princess delivered just that—a rejuvenating break from the harsh winter and a festive celebration of the New Year, all while sailing through the enchanting Hawaiian Islands.

This 16-day itinerary featured a delightful blend of sea days and island adventures, starting with a scenic departure from San Francisco. The cruise included five sea days each way, offering ample time to relax onboard with world-class amenities such as large-scale shows, immersive spa events, diverse dining options, casino excitement, live music, shopping, and fun games for all ages. Whether traveling with family, friends, or solo, passengers found endless opportunities to enjoy every moment at sea.

The Ruby Princess dazzled guests with its festive décor and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect setting for an unforgettable getaway. A highlight for many was the presence of the Ambassadors of Aloha, Aolani and Auntie Geri, who shared their Hawaiian heritage through engaging hula dancing lessons, ukulele sessions, and lei-making crafts. Their hands-on workshops provided travelers with a unique cultural insight and practical skills, enriching the overall cruising experience.

Beyond onboard activities, the cruise itinerary included stops at four remarkable Hawaiian ports: Hilo, Kona, Nawiliwili on Kauai, and Honolulu on Oahu. In Hilo, on the east coast of the Big Island, guests marveled at the lush landscapes of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where the imposing Mauna Loa and its neighboring green rainforests and black sand beaches set an other-worldly scene. Excursions in Hilo included visits to Rainbow and Akaka Falls, a tour of Wai’po Valley, and explorations of Kilauea Lava Fields, ensuring visitors experienced the island’s natural wonders firsthand.

Kona, located on the western side of the Big Island, offered a relaxing tendered port experience with an abundance of local shops and restaurants. Passengers delighted in sampling local culinary specialties, such as the ever-popular Spam Sushi—a nod to the island’s enduring culinary traditions—and savoring Kona coffee, renowned for its exquisite flavor, thanks to the region’s fertile soil and ample rainfall.

The cruise then moved to Nawiliwili, Kauai—fondly known as the Garden Island—where vibrant orchids, fragrant hibiscus, and dramatic landscapes of Waimea Canyon, Fern Grotto, and Opaekaa Falls captivated visitors. Here, free shuttles provided convenient transport to local shopping destinations like Hilo Hattie’s, or guests could simply wander to nearby beaches for a day of swimming, snorkeling, or paddle boarding.

The final Hawaiian stop was in Honolulu on Oahu, where the modern cityscape meets historic landmarks. Guests marveled at iconic sites like the statue of King Kamehameha and Iolani Palace, strolled along scenic paths leading to Diamond Head and the verdant rainforests, or visited the solemn Pearl Harbor National Memorial. With plentiful time at port—from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.—visitors had the flexibility to rent cars or join guided excursions that showcased Oahu’s unique blend of urban energy and natural beauty.

As the Ruby Princess journeyed back to San Francisco, the final stop in Ensenada, Mexico, allowed the ship to comply with the 1920 Merchant Maritime Act, also known as the Jones Act. Ensenada, known as the gateway to the Baja peninsula and even celebrated as the birthplace of the margarita, offered a charming taste of local culture and natural marvels like La Bufadora—the largest marine geyser in the region.

Wave season is the perfect time to escape the winter chill and embrace the Aloha way of life. With attractive seasonal deals available for 2025 winter cruises to Hawaii, now is the time to plan your getaway and experience a blend of relaxation, cultural enrichment, and breathtaking natural beauty that only Hawaii can offer.
