Eurowings Modernizes Fleet with Boeing 737-8s, Retire A319 Fleet
Eurowings is gearing up for a major fleet upgrade as part of a sweeping modernization plan, with the carrier set to replace its aging Airbus A319s and older Airbus A320s with 40 brand-new Boeing 737-8 Max jets. The decision was confirmed by the Lufthansa Group on January 20, 2024, following its December 2023 order for the new aircraft. This fleet update is not only a significant investment for Eurowings but also a strong strategic move by the Lufthansa Group to enhance its competitive edge in the European point-to-point market.
A Strategic Move for Sustainable Growth
Lufthansa Group Chairman and CEO Carsten Spohr emphasized the importance of this fleet renewal, noting that Eurowings has firmly established itself as the leading European point-to-point airline within the group. “Eurowings has established itself as the European point-to-point airline of the Lufthansa Group with a convincing strategy and thanks to its outstanding employees in an extremely competitive market,” Spohr stated. He further elaborated that the strategic focus on expanding its tourism business and consistently increasing market presence across Europe has contributed to the entire group’s success. Spohr described the allocation of the Boeing 737-8 jets as “a well-deserved and strong signal for a successful future of Eurowings.”
The decision to invest in the Boeing 737-8 comes as a part of what Lufthansa Group calls one of the “largest fleet modernization programs in European aviation.” Scheduled to begin in 2027, the rollout of the new jets is expected to drive significant improvements in operational efficiency and sustainability. The order represents a staggering $5 billion fleet investment and underlines the group’s commitment to achieving low-emission flying through reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, and significantly less noise compared to older aircraft models.
Enhanced Comfort and Efficiency
With a redesigned cabin layout, the new Boeing 737-8 jets will offer increased comfort and an expanded passenger capacity of up to 189 seats. Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof explained that the high-cost efficiency of these state-of-the-art aircraft will enable the airline to continue offering fair and attractive fares to its customers. “With 40 state-of-the-art aircraft, we are laying the foundations for a successful Eurowings future that is geared towards ambitious sustainability goals,” Bischof said. He added that such a technological leap is essential for the airline to maintain its competitive position in the market well into the 2030s.
The revamped cabin is designed to enhance the passenger experience with more space, better seating, and state-of-the-art in-flight amenities. In December 2023, alongside the order for the 40 Boeing 737-8 jets, Lufthansa Group also confirmed a firm purchase of 40 Airbus A220-300s for Lufthansa City Airlines. This dual investment highlights the group’s comprehensive approach to fleet renewal, targeting both low-cost and full-service segments to ensure enhanced operational performance and sustainability across its portfolio.
As the new fleet rollout begins in 2027, Eurowings is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in European air travel.
