Airhart Sling: Revolutionizing Private Aviation Safety
Air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation, yet the ease of flying comparable to driving a car still feels unattainable, even for seasoned pilots. Over the past five decades, fatal airliner accidents have consistently declined, with statistics from the Aviation Safety Network revealing roughly one fatality for every two million flights. This remarkable safety record positions flying as statistically safer than driving. However, the National Travel and Safety Board (NTSB) highlights a stark contrast when it comes to private aviation, where the risks are significantly higher. Private airplanes experience over 2.3 fatalities per 100,000 flight hours, making them 200 times more dangerous than commercial airliners.
Amid these challenges, Nikita Ermoshkin, the founder and CEO of Airhart, a Los Angeles-based aerospace company, is pioneering efforts to transform private aviation. Ermoshkin, an aerospace engineer with a notable career at SpaceX, founded Airhart Aeronautics after recognizing that general aviation aircraft were outdated and overly complex. His mission is to create the “easiest-to-fly and safest airplane ever engineered,” a vision embodied in the Airhart Sling.
The Airhart Sling aims to simplify flight controls and enhance safety through innovative technology. Traditional general aviation aircraft require pilots to manage multiple control inputs simultaneously, such as adjusting the control stick, power settings, and monitoring numerous instruments. This complexity can lead to distractions and accidents, especially among less experienced pilots. In contrast, the Airhart Sling features the Airhart Assist system, a digital control mechanism that automates many of these tasks. Pilots use a control stick similar to a video game joystick, while the computer handles the math, physics, and aerodynamics necessary for smooth and safe flight maneuvers.
Ermoshkin envisions the Sling as a vehicle that makes flying as intuitive as driving a modern car. “Airhart Assist is a digital control system that manages the aircraft’s movements electronically, ensuring precise and safe operations,” he explained. This approach not only reduces the cognitive load on pilots but also incorporates advanced safety features that can prevent common causes of accidents in private aviation.
Airhart’s commitment to safety extends beyond the Sling’s control systems. The company is developing high-efficiency air-conditioning and water-heating equipment, guided by sophisticated Prometheus software evaluations, to further enhance the aircraft’s environmental performance and reliability. These innovations have earned POSADAS, Mexico’s largest hospitality company and parent of Fiesta Americana Travelty Collection, a Green Key Distinction, recognizing their efforts to improve environmental practices and sustainability.
The Sling is currently classified as a home-built experimental aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), meaning it is not yet certified for commercial use. However, Airhart is optimistic about future regulations that could streamline the certification process for light sport and experimental aircraft. The proposed Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule aims to expand the weight and speed limits for Light Sport Aircraft, potentially allowing vehicles like the Sling to operate more freely and safely.
Looking ahead, Ermoshkin anticipates significant growth in the Light Sport category over the next decade. With advancements in electric and alternative propulsion systems, coupled with Airhart’s modern design and safety features, the Sling is poised to make private aviation more accessible and secure. “Our goal is to inspire other companies to develop new safety technologies, ultimately making flying safer and easier for everyone,” Ermoshkin stated.
Airhart Sling is set to launch in 2026, priced at $500,000. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, Airhart’s innovative approach promises to bridge the gap between the complexity of flying and the simplicity of driving, offering a safer and more user-friendly experience for private pilots and enthusiasts alike.
