New Terminal at Tobago’s TAB to Boost Caribbean Routes
The upcoming completion of a brand-new terminal at ANR Robinson International Airport (TAB) in Tobago is set to transform the island’s air connectivity and cement its status as a key gateway to the Caribbean. Valued at $870 million, the terminal is slated for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2025 and is expected to be fully operational by mid-year, signaling a new era of growth and expansion for Tobago.
Managed by the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, the new terminal is strategically positioned to attract new carriers and expand international route offerings. With over 30 airlines currently operating at TAB, the fresh facility is poised to drive additional traffic and open up new markets. Speaking at Routes Americas 2025 in Nassau, Bahamas, Zola Joseph, Corporate Communications Manager for the Airports Authority, emphasized the transformative impact of the project.
“With this new terminal, we are signaling to the world that Tobago is open for business,” Joseph stated. “We anticipate increased interest from both international and regional carriers, which will allow us to introduce new direct routes to high-demand markets such as North America, Europe, South America, and beyond.”
The project is part of a broader initiative to boost the regional air connectivity of the Caribbean. The new terminal at TAB follows a period of significant expansion at Port of Spain’s Piarco International Airport (POS) in Trinidad. In 2024, for instance, Frontier Airlines launched a direct route between POS and San Juan, Puerto Rico, while LIAT 2020 introduced new service from Antigua. These developments have been described as “key milestones” in strengthening inter-island travel options and expanding the region’s overall air service network.
Looking ahead, the Airports Authority is actively exploring further opportunities to enhance connectivity and accessibility. Joseph noted that efforts are underway to secure new routes not only to traditional markets in Europe and North America but also to emerging destinations in South America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. “We are targeting the expansion of routes into Europe, North America, and within the Caribbean region,” she added, highlighting the authority’s commitment to making Tobago a more accessible and attractive destination for leisure and business travelers alike.
The new terminal is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism and the local economy by increasing passenger arrivals and attracting investment in the hospitality and service sectors. With enhanced facilities, state-of-the-art technology, and expanded capacity, the terminal will support a projected surge in passenger traffic, offering improved services for both departing and arriving travelers.
