Business Travel Tech Fails to Meet Employee Expectations

Business travelers are bypassing corporate booking tools in favor of consumer travel sites, highlighting gaps in corporate travel technology, according to a new Center report.
The study, based on responses from 200 finance leaders at mid-sized U.S. companies, found that 61% of business travelers avoid company-provided booking tools. Additionally, while 88% of companies have written travel policies, 49% of employees are unaware of them, making compliance difficult.
The report suggests that user-friendly travel booking and expense management technology, combined with better training, would increase adoption rates. Currently, 68% of employees find corporate booking tools cumbersome or are unaware of their existence.
Integrated travel and expense management solutions could help capture out-of-policy spending and improve compliance with travel programs, the report states.
There has been a growing trend of travel management companies acquiring expense management providers to create seamless corporate booking experiences. Spend management firms like Center have also partnered with corporate travel booking platforms to address these challenges.
Naveen Singh, CEO of Center, emphasized that a “card-first approach” could help align business travel tools with employee expectations, improving compliance and cost control.
“When employees can leverage corporate tools with the same convenience as consumer platforms, businesses gain better oversight and financial control,” Singh said.
With mid-market companies planning to increase business travel spending, bridging this tech gap is crucial for efficient travel management.
