flydubai (FZ, Dubai International) is reportedly in talks to acquire over 200 narrowbody aircraft, with options for an additional 100 jets, as part of its fleet expansion and modernization strategy, according to Bloomberg.

CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith confirmed that the airline is in ongoing discussions with aircraft manufacturers regarding future orders but did not specify a timeline for finalization.

Advance planning and reliable aircraft delivery schedules are key to any airline’s expansion and fleet replacement strategy,” he stated. “We are currently assessing our narrowbody aircraft needs, and an official decision will be announced once finalized.”

Traditionally a Boeing customer, flydubai has not ruled out adding Airbus aircraft amid ongoing production challenges at Boeing. The airline previously made headlines at the Dubai Airshow 2023 with an order for 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, marking its first venture into widebody aircraft.

Other Middle Eastern carriers are also pursuing fleet expansions. Etihad Airways is in talks to acquire up to 40 widebody jets, while Qatar Airways is considering a 230-widebody order. Additionally, Riyadh Air is exploring options for 50 new widebody aircraft.

Gulf Air is also reportedly looking to add around 10 widebody aircraft to its fleet, though no official statements have been made.

As Gulf carriers ramp up fleet expansions, flydubai’s potential massive narrowbody order could reshape regional aviation dynamics.
