Changi Airport: Full Recovery & Future Growth

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) achieved a major milestone in 2024 by handling approximately 68 million passengers, fully recovering to pre-COVID levels. With partnerships spanning over 100 airlines, the airport now serves more than 150 cities worldwide, reinforcing its status as a leading global hub.
Key developments have helped SIN regain momentum and expand its connectivity. Air Canada marked its return in April 2024 with a new 4X-weekly service to Vancouver—the only nonstop flight linking Singapore and Canada. In the European market, Singapore Airlines launched flights to Brussels in April, while from June, the airline introduced a 5X-weekly service to London Gatwick, tapping into the growing demand for direct routes to Europe.
Singapore Airlines’ low-cost carrier, Scoot, has also made significant strides by expanding its network across Asia Pacific. Leveraging its new Embraer E190-E2 fleet, Scoot now flies to several new destinations. These include routes to Malacca (MKZ) and Subang (SZB) in Malaysia; Kertajati (KJT) and Minangkabau (PDG) in Indonesia; and Phu Quoc (PQC) in Vietnam. Moreover, Scoot is set to launch flights to Shantou in China starting January 16, further solidifying its position in the region.
China remains a strong growth market for Changi. Currently, the airport offers direct flights from more than 30 Chinese cities, serving the increasing number of Chinese travelers. Lim Ching Kiat, Executive Vice President of Air Hub & Cargo Development at SIN, expressed confidence in adding more Chinese destinations in the coming years. This commitment is backed by robust passenger demand and Changi’s strategic efforts to enhance connectivity.
Japan also shows promising growth potential. Air Japan and Peach Aviation have both introduced new services from Tokyo and Osaka to Singapore in 2024, providing travelers with more choices and reinforcing the bilateral travel link between Singapore and Japan.
Looking to the future, SIN is setting its sights on expanding further into Europe and emerging markets. Ching Kiat noted high passenger load factors in major European cities like Madrid, Vienna, Geneva, and Warsaw, suggesting that direct flights from these cities could be a reality soon. In addition, emerging markets such as Saudi Arabia, particularly Riyadh, and Central Asia are key targets for future expansion.
In a strategic move to bolster capacity, Changi Airport plans to launch Terminal 5 as part of the Changi East development by the mid-2030s. This new terminal is expected to increase the airport’s capacity by an additional 50 million passenger movements annually, ensuring that SIN continues to meet global travel demand while maintaining its competitive edge.
Sustainability remains a top priority at SIN. The airport is advancing its green initiatives by aiming to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 20% by 2030. In tandem, all airside vehicles will transition to cleaner energy by the end of 2024. Investments in rooftop solar panels and EV charging infrastructure underscore Changi’s commitment to environmentally responsible operations.
With these initiatives and strategic expansions, Singapore Changi Airport is not only recovering its pre-pandemic stature but also paving the way for sustainable, long-term growth in global connectivity.
