Oman’s low-cost carrier SalamAir is gearing up for significant fleet growth, as the airline has formally requested 10 additional Airbus A320 aircraft from several leading aircraft leasing companies. Announced on February 20, 2025, the move comes as SalamAir responds to surging passenger demand and a rapidly expanding market for budget travel in Oman and the wider region.

In recent years, SalamAir’s commitment to a low-fare model has resonated strongly with travelers. The carrier has seen impressive growth, with passenger numbers increasing by 20% in 2024 to exceed 3.2 million. This strong performance has encouraged the airline to look ahead and expand its fleet over the next three years to meet projected growth targets for the coming five-year period.

“Our return to our Low-Fare approach has been highly successful, with full aircraft and more demand than we can meet,” said Adrian Hamilton-Manns, SalamAir’s CEO. He explained that the new order for 10 Airbus A320s is a direct response to the increasing passenger load and the need to develop additional domestic and regional routes. “Our expansion over the next five years requires more aircraft to enable us to develop more domestic and regional flights, and to introduce destinations that are currently unserved by airlines,” Hamilton-Manns added.

The new aircraft are expected to bolster SalamAir’s network significantly. By acquiring the 10 Airbus A320s, the airline aims to stimulate tourism to Oman and ramp up growth in the sector. Hamilton-Manns noted that the carrier’s low-fare model is not only popular but also a key driver of market competition. “We see other airlines attempting to move to this market due to the obvious demand that exists; this is positive as competition will reduce fares and benefit the consumer,” he stated.

Currently, SalamAir’s fleet consists of four Airbus A320neos, four A321neos, and two A321LRs, with two new A321neos scheduled to join the fleet later this year. The planned acquisition of the 10 Airbus A320 aircraft will complement the existing fleet and provide the carrier with the flexibility to launch new routes and increase frequency on existing ones. This strategic fleet expansion is expected to improve overall operational efficiency, lower per-seat costs, and offer customers a more extensive range of travel options.

The airline’s expansion strategy reflects its long-term vision to capture a larger share of the growing low-cost travel market in Oman and beyond. As SalamAir continues to experience robust growth and increased customer demand, the additional capacity from the 10 new Airbus A320s will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the airline remains competitive in an evolving aviation landscape.

SalamAir’s decision to approach multiple leasing companies demonstrates its proactive approach in securing aircraft quickly amid a competitive market. With strong future growth prospects and a commitment to providing affordable travel solutions, the airline is well positioned to expand its network and contribute to the ongoing development of Oman’s aviation sector.

As the market continues to evolve and passenger numbers rise, SalamAir’s planned fleet expansion will be crucial in meeting demand and ensuring that travelers enjoy a reliable, cost-effective service. The coming years are set to be transformative for the carrier as it continues to invest in its fleet and network, paving the way for a new era in low-cost aviation in the region.
