India’s Shankh Air Sets March 2025 Aircraft Arrival

Indian start-up Shankh Air is gearing up to launch its operations with a promising new aircraft delivery expected by the end of March 2025. Co-founder and executive director Anurag Chhabra recently shared his optimism with The Hindu Business Line, outlining the company’s ambitious plans to build a competitive full-service carrier in India.
According to Chhabra, the airline is on track to receive its first aircraft by March 2025. “In all probability, we are expecting our first aircraft to arrive by March 2025,” he stated, adding that the initial phase will involve leasing at least two jet aircraft. These leased aircraft will serve as the cornerstone of Shankh Air’s fleet, with plans to expand to five aircraft within the first year, in accordance with the conditions set by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Shankh Air is poised to operate as a full-service national carrier. The company has already secured a full-service national carrier licence, a critical milestone that positions it well for future expansion. Chhabra emphasized that the airline’s focus is exclusively on jet aircraft, underscoring its commitment to providing efficient and reliable services across the country.
Earlier this year, industry sources at ch-aviation reported that Shankh Air was planning a launch in May 2025 using Airbus A320-200s. However, the DGCA has yet to issue the airline its air operator’s certificate, a necessary document for commencing commercial operations. Despite the regulatory delay, Chhabra remains confident in overcoming these hurdles. He acknowledged that while the leasing market is tight, the company is determined to secure the aircraft it needs within the short timeframe.
In response to inquiries, a spokesperson for Shankh Air noted that the airline is currently reviewing the technical aspects of an aircraft type under consideration. The spokesperson, however, declined to provide further details, citing a non-disclosure agreement. This cautious approach underscores the competitive nature of the aviation leasing market, where timely and confidential negotiations play a key role.
Shankh Air’s launch strategy includes an initial focus on key domestic routes. The airline plans to operate scheduled services starting from Lucknow, its home base, connecting to major hubs such as Delhi International and Mumbai International airports. This strategic route selection is designed to tap into the growing demand for efficient air travel within India, while also positioning Shankh Air as a strong competitor in the national market.
The company’s publicised fleet plan includes acquiring five Airbus A320-200s in the current year, with an additional ten aircraft planned for 2026. This measured expansion is intended to balance rapid growth with operational sustainability. By starting with a lean fleet and gradually scaling up, Shankh Air aims to manage costs effectively while delivering high-quality services to its passengers.
As Shankh Air prepares for its imminent launch, the aviation industry will be watching closely. The start-up’s success in navigating regulatory challenges and securing timely aircraft deliveries could set a new benchmark for emerging carriers in India. With a clear focus on full-service operations and strategic route planning, Shankh Air is well positioned to make a significant impact on the competitive landscape of Indian aviation.
Overall, the airline’s proactive approach, coupled with its confident outlook on securing aircraft despite a tight leasing market, paints a promising picture for its future. As the clock ticks toward March 2025, Shankh Air’s first aircraft arrival is eagerly anticipated by industry observers and future passengers alike, marking a new chapter in India’s dynamic aviation sector.
