Frontier Airlines Expands Service at Seattle Paine Field

U.S. ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is set to become the second airline to operate out of Seattle Paine Field Airport (PAE), intensifying competition with Alaska Airlines on key domestic routes. Known for its proximity to Boeing’s Everett factory and a popular location for aircraft test flights, Paine Field began handling commercial traffic in March 2019. Until now, Alaska Airlines—based at nearby Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)—has been the sole carrier serving this unique airport, which is located about 30 miles north of SEA.
Starting June 2, Frontier Airlines will launch flights from Paine Field to three destinations. Two of these routes, linking PAE with Las Vegas and Phoenix, are already served by Alaska Airlines. As an all-Airbus A320-family operator, Frontier is set to offer these routes on a 3X-weekly frequency, giving travelers more options for leisure and business travel from a convenient alternative to SEA. In addition to the Las Vegas and Phoenix services, Frontier will also inaugurate a 3X-weekly route connecting Paine Field with its Denver hub. This new service will further solidify Frontier’s network and provide enhanced connectivity for passengers traveling between the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountains.
The expansion into Paine Field marks a significant development in the competitive landscape for airlines in the Seattle region. While Alaska Airlines also operates additional routes from Paine Field—including flights to Honolulu and five California destinations such as Los Angeles, Orange County, Palm Springs, San Diego, and San Francisco—Frontier’s entry is expected to shake up the market by providing a fresh alternative for travelers. By offering competitive pricing and an expanding network, Frontier is poised to attract a broader customer base that values both convenience and cost efficiency.
In a strategic move to capture more market share, Frontier is not only expanding its domestic routes but also planning to boost its international offerings. The carrier is gearing up to start 2X-weekly flights between San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic beginning June 19. This international service highlights Frontier’s ambition to broaden its appeal beyond the U.S. mainland and tap into growing demand for leisure travel in the Caribbean region.
Industry analysts believe that Frontier’s expanded operations at Paine Field could stimulate increased passenger traffic at this emerging airport. With its strategic location and modern facilities, Paine Field offers a viable alternative for travelers looking to avoid the congestion often associated with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Frontier’s new routes may also encourage more airlines to consider Paine Field as a competitive gateway, potentially spurring further development and connectivity improvements in the region.
By launching these additional services, Frontier Airlines is not only strengthening its domestic network but also reinforcing its commitment to providing affordable travel options. The new routes from Paine Field are expected to offer significant benefits to both leisure and business travelers, as well as to local communities looking to capitalize on improved air connectivity. As the airline ramps up its service, passengers can anticipate a more diverse range of flight options and enhanced travel experiences across the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest, and beyond.
