Virgin Australia Taps Dave Emerson as CEO

Virgin Australia has announced a major leadership transition as current Chief Commercial Officer Dave Emerson is named the new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Jayne Hrdlicka after her four-year tenure. The appointment, revealed on March 5, 2025, marks a pivotal moment for the airline as it embarks on the next chapter of its transformation journey.
Emerson, a veteran of the aviation industry, began his career in 1990 as a customer service representative at America West Airlines. Over the years, he has steadily advanced through various roles, most recently proving his capabilities as Virgin Australia’s CCO since joining the carrier in June 2021. Now, he will begin his transition into the CEO role immediately, with a formal handover scheduled for March 14, 2025.
In a statement expressing his gratitude, Emerson said he was “humbled by the opportunity to lead the airline and its 8,000-strong team on its next exciting chapter.” His appointment is viewed as a natural progression given his extensive experience and his integral role in shaping the company’s strategy. Emerson’s leadership is expected to build on the success Virgin Australia has achieved in recent years, particularly its record domestic performance that saw the airline surpass Qantas by flying the most domestic passengers in 2024, as confirmed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in February 2024.
Jayne Hrdlicka, who has guided the airline through a transformative period, will assist with the transition over the coming months before retiring later in the year. “It is now the perfect time to transition leadership for this next chapter. Dave is an excellent choice to succeed me as CEO. He has proven himself as a strong leader and has been a key contributor to Virgin Australia’s successful transformation journey,” Hrdlicka said. Her confidence in Emerson is grounded in his proven track record of driving profitability and growth while innovating domestic and international services.
Virgin Australia’s Chairman Ryan Cotton also praised Emerson’s appointment, describing him as a “core part of the team” who has been instrumental in developing plans for the airline’s transformation and growth. Emerson’s background includes studies at Stanford University and significant industry experience with aviation consultancy Bain & Company, experiences that have provided him with a robust foundation for leading a modern airline in a highly competitive market.
Under Emerson’s leadership, Virgin Australia aims to return to long-haul international flying and further innovate its domestic services, promising passengers greater travel options and enhanced value. “Today, we are Australia’s most loved airline, delivering industry-leading operational performance and record financial results. I will continue the transformation journey begun under Jayne’s outstanding leadership,” Emerson stated. He added that the new strategy will create fresh opportunities for passengers—through more choices and loyalty rewards—and for the airline’s dedicated team.
This leadership change comes at a crucial time as Virgin Australia continues to rebuild and expand following its emergence from Administration several years ago. With Emerson at the helm, the airline is poised to capitalize on its strong domestic performance, renewed international ambitions, and its commitment to delivering superior travel experiences.
