Young Travelers in Southeast Asia Shift to AI Trip Planning

By 2027, the Southeast Asia travel market is projected to reach $73 billion in bookings, driven by rapid digital adoption and AI-driven trip planning, according to Phocuswright’s Southeast Asia Travel Market Report 2023-2027.
Southeast Asia’s travel industry is increasingly mobile-first, with AI agents and automation shaping booking behaviors. Online travel penetration is expected to rise from 62% in 2023 to 74% in 2027, signaling a shift toward seamless, tech-driven experiences.
Young travelers are at the forefront of this transformation, embracing AI-powered trip planning, digital concierge apps, and crypto payments. With on-demand convenience shaping their decision-making, travel booking platforms must evolve to match their expectations for speed and personalization.
The online travel distribution landscape is set for significant growth. In 2026, online travel bookings will surpass $50 billion, exceeding $54 billion by 2027. Mobile bookings will account for over 50% of these transactions, with projected mobile gross bookings reaching $29.2 billion in 2027—four times higher than in 2022.
Social commerce, branded e-payments, and AI-driven recommendations are increasingly influencing booking decisions, reflecting trends seen in China’s mobile-first economy. While cashless transactions in Southeast Asia are not yet at Shanghai or Beijing levels, adoption is accelerating.
Travel suppliers and intermediaries recognize the demand for high-quality, frictionless service. AI-powered platforms are redefining how young travelers search, book, and experience travel, with instant, touchless transactions becoming the norm in the region’s digital-first travel market.
