Japan Airlines (JAL) and Garuda Indonesia have announced a new joint business partnership that will begin on April 1, 2025, enhancing their cooperation on flights between Indonesia and Japan. Building on their existing codeshare agreement signed in October 2024, the two carriers will synchronize flight schedules to improve connections and provide more seamless travel experiences for passengers.

This expanded partnership will offer benefits such as competitive ticket prices and an overall smoother journey for customers. The airlines plan to cover over 34 routes between Indonesia and Japan, providing passengers access to numerous new destinations.

Under the joint business arrangement, Garuda Indonesia flights will carry the ‘JL’ code for Japan Airlines on routes from Jakarta to several Indonesian cities, including Kuala Namu, Pekanbaru, Makassar, Manado, Solo, and Surabaya. Similarly, Japan Airlines flights will carry the ‘GA’ code for Garuda on routes from Tokyo-Haneda to multiple Japanese cities, including Osaka, Okinawa, and Hiroshima. All flights under the codeshare are subject to regulatory approval.

Additionally, the two airlines will align their frequent flyer programs, allowing passengers to earn and redeem miles on both airlines. This partnership aims to strengthen market share for Garuda Indonesia in East Asia while promoting tourism from Japan to Indonesia, highlighting destinations like Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Medan.

Ross Leggett, Senior Vice President of Route Marketing at Japan Airlines, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating it will deliver key benefits to customers and strengthen business and cultural ties between Japan and Indonesia. Garuda Indonesia’s Commercial Director, Ade R. Susardi, emphasized the alignment of the partnership with efforts to support sustainable tourism development in Indonesia.
