Avelo Airlines Expands International and Domestic Network
U.S. carrier Avelo Airlines is set to boost its route network as it expands both internationally and domestically. The airline will make Nassau, Bahamas, its fourth international destination with service launching from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) on June 11, 2025. Operating four roundtrip flights per week on a seasonal basis, the new route will connect RDU to Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS). With this addition, RDU now serves three international routes, following the launch of services to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic earlier in February.
Avelo, founded in 2021, currently operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 737NG aircraft and has been expanding its international footprint. In addition to its routes from RDU, the airline also flies from Bradley International Airport (BDL) near Hartford, Connecticut, to Cancun International Airport (CUN) in Mexico and to Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ). The BDL routes, launched in November 2024, marked a significant milestone as the first international service for the Houston-based carrier. Avelo Commercial Head Trevor Yealy has expressed confidence about further international expansion, citing strong data that shows a solid base of passengers connecting from RDU to destinations like Punta Cana and Montego Bay. In fact, RDU has now become the fastest-growing international gateway with 15.5 million passengers in 2024, reflecting a 6.5 percent year-over-year increase.
In addition to its international growth, Avelo is aggressively expanding its domestic network. The airline is launching two new domestic routes from RDU: one to Wilmington, Delaware, beginning May 22 and another to Grand Rapids, Michigan, starting on May 23. Both of these routes will be operated twice weekly. Further domestic expansion includes the introduction of two new routes from Lakeland, Florida, to both Gerald Ford International Airport (GRR) in Grand Rapids and Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) in New York. These new points are set to diversify Avelo’s route map and cater to growing demand in different regions.
The carrier is also establishing a new base at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) in North Carolina. Initially, one Boeing 737NG will be stationed at ILM, with plans to add a second later in the year. From this base, four new routes are scheduled to begin mid-June, offering twice-weekly flights to Detroit Metro (DTW), Houston Hobby, ISP, and Washington Dulles (IAD). Additionally, Avelo has recently set up a base at North Carolina’s Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA), located approximately 20 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. At USA, the airline will start service to ISP on May 22, IAD on May 23, and DTW on June 13, with all three routes operating twice weekly.
These strategic expansions underscore Avelo Airlines’ commitment to increasing capacity and meeting the needs of a growing market. By enhancing connectivity from key hubs such as RDU, BDL, ILM, and USA, Avelo aims to provide travelers with more options for both leisure and business travel across North America and beyond. With plans for further evaluation of potential new international routes, Avelo is poised to capitalize on strong passenger demand and set new standards in the ultra-low-cost carrier market. The ongoing network growth not only reflects robust market dynamics but also demonstrates the airline’s ability to compete effectively with larger carriers in the global aviation landscape.
