Avelo Airlines Shifts Chicago Service and Expands U.S. Network

U.S. carrier Avelo Airlines is making significant changes to its route network and expanding its presence in key domestic markets. Starting in May, the airline will begin serving Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), marking a strategic switch from its previous service at Chicago Midway Airport (MDW). For the past three summers, Avelo has operated seasonal flights between Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN)—its largest East Coast base—and MDW. However, beginning May 15, the carrier will fly a Boeing 737NG on the HVN-ORD route, which will be operated twice weekly. This change represents Avelo’s effort to tap into a new market in Chicago with increased capacity and more appealing service options.

In addition to the new Chicago service, Avelo Airlines is further bolstering its domestic network with recent base expansions in North Carolina. On April 3, the carrier opened its eighth aircraft base at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) in eastern North Carolina. Initially, one Boeing 737NG will be stationed at ILM, with plans to add a second aircraft later in the year to meet growing demand. To mark the opening of this new base, Avelo launched three new routes from Wilmington International Airport. These new services will connect ILM with Manchester, New Hampshire; Nashville International Airport (BNA), Tennessee; and Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) in New York, each operating twice weekly. The expansion at ILM highlights Avelo’s commitment to serving a variety of regional markets and providing convenient travel options from the southeastern United States.

The recent opening of the ILM base follows the establishment of another new base at Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA) in western North Carolina last month. Located about 20 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, this base further enhances Avelo’s footprint in the region. On April 3, Avelo launched a twice-weekly route between Concord-Padgett Regional Airport and Nashville International Airport (BNA). In addition, the airline started twice-weekly flights between BNA and ROC, adding more options for passengers traveling between these markets.

The network expansion continued on April 4, when Avelo introduced two additional twice-weekly routes. One new service connects Manchester, New Hampshire, with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, while the other links Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) with Detroit. These route launches are part of Avelo’s broader strategy to increase connectivity, enhance its market presence, and provide affordable travel options to more U.S. cities.

Overall, these changes and new route launches reflect Avelo Airlines’ aggressive efforts to expand its domestic network amid a competitive market environment. By shifting its Chicago operations to O’Hare and opening new bases in strategic locations across North Carolina, the airline is positioning itself to better serve a diverse range of travelers.
