United Airlines Launches Houston-PMX Route

United Airlines has launched a new nonstop service from Houston to Puerto Escondido International Airport (PMX), marking the first scheduled international route for the Mexican airport. The new connection, which began operations on April 5, will run three times per week using Embraer 175 aircraft and is a significant milestone for both United and the region. This service is operated by Mesa Airlines under the United Express brand, linking Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) with one of Oaxaca’s most promising tourist destinations.
This historic launch is expected to boost international connectivity for Puerto Escondido, an emerging hotspot on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Javier García Bejos, director general of Aeropuertos Mexicanos (AME), described the new route as a pivotal moment for the region. “This is a historic moment for Puerto Escondido,” he said. “We are opening our doors to the world with the arrival of United Airlines and a direct connection to Houston.” García Bejos highlighted that the route is a clear signal of growing international interest in the Pacific coastal region of Oaxaca, with its pristine beaches, vibrant local culture, and untapped tourism potential.
The introduction of the Houston-PMX service reflects AME’s ongoing strategy to invest in airport infrastructure and expand international routes. As part of a broader plan to modernize and increase capacity, significant terminal expansion and modernization projects are currently underway at Puerto Escondido International Airport. With a $200 million investment, the first phase of these improvements is designed to boost annual capacity to more than 3 million passengers, ensuring that the airport can accommodate the growing demand driven by both domestic and international travelers.
The new route from Houston is part of United Airlines’ larger strategy to enhance U.S.-Mexico connectivity. According to data provided by OAG Schedules Analyser, United intends to offer 48 nonstop U.S.-Mexico routes during the summer 2025 season, with 23 routes originating from IAH. This expansion underscores the airline’s commitment to increasing its network and providing travelers with more direct options to popular and emerging destinations alike.
For Puerto Escondido, the new service is particularly significant. In recent years, the airport has experienced record domestic growth and has become increasingly popular with international tourists seeking an alternative to Mexico’s more established resort cities. The United flight not only paves the way for further international connections but also reinforces the region’s appeal as a rising destination for leisure travel. “The United flight is just the beginning,” García Bejos said. “We see strong potential for more international routes in the near future.”
AME is also actively pursuing similar strategies at other airports, such as Riviera Nayarit International Airport, to boost air connectivity and foster regional tourism growth. By focusing on infrastructure improvements and new route development, AME aims to create a more robust and accessible travel network that benefits both travelers and the local economy.
The launch of this new service by United Airlines and Mesa Airlines is a testament to the evolving dynamics of international air travel, as carriers and airports work together to unlock new markets and meet the rising demand for seamless connectivity between the United States and Mexico. With the new Houston-PMX route now in operation, Puerto Escondido is poised to take the next step in its evolution as a key international gateway on Mexico’s picturesque Pacific coast.
