Edinburgh Airport has been honored as the Overall Winner at the Routes Europe 2025 Awards, while also taking top honors in the 5-20 Million Passengers category. The Scottish airport’s achievement was celebrated during the prestigious event held in Seville, Spain, which recognizes excellence in airport and destination marketing. As one of the five winners at the ceremony, Edinburgh Airport joins notable industry leaders including London Southend Airport, Madrid-Barajas Airport, Turismo de Portugal, and Jet2.com.

The accolade is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Edinburgh Airport team and its close collaboration with airline partners. Jonny Macneal, Head of Aviation at Edinburgh Airport, expressed his delight at receiving the award, emphasizing that recognition from the airline community makes the achievement even more special. Macneal highlighted that the award reflects the collaborative efforts that have strengthened connections between Scotland and global travel markets, ultimately offering more choices for passengers. He expressed optimism about continuing these partnerships and further building on the progress made over the past year.

In 2024, Edinburgh Airport experienced a record-breaking year, welcoming 15.8 million passengers. This impressive performance was driven by the launch of 17 new routes across nine different airlines, including high-profile additions from JetBlue Airways, Emirates, Pegasus Airlines, and Aurigny. A significant surge in long-haul traffic, which increased by 50% compared to 2019, further solidified Edinburgh’s position as a key gateway to the United States—the largest number of U.S. destinations offered outside London in the United Kingdom. Looking ahead to 2025, the airport is set to introduce 15 additional new routes, underscoring its commitment to expanding connectivity and enhancing the travel experience for both domestic and international passengers.

The success at Edinburgh Airport is part of a broader trend within the industry, where strategic investments in route development and partnerships are leading to substantial growth in passenger numbers. The airport’s focus on providing a diverse range of flight options and improving its infrastructure has resonated with travelers, who are increasingly seeking convenient and direct connections to key destinations. Macneal noted that the collaborative approach with airline partners has been instrumental in delivering these results, with the support of national tourism bodies playing a pivotal role in driving the expansion.

The Routes Europe 2025 Awards also celebrated other outstanding achievements in the aviation sector. London Southend Airport was recognized as the Overall Winner in the Under 5 Million Passengers category, while Madrid-Barajas Airport claimed the top spot for airports handling over 20 million passengers. Turismo de Portugal and Jet2.com were awarded for their contributions to destination marketing and airline excellence, respectively. These awards reflect a dynamic and competitive industry, where innovation, service quality, and effective marketing strategies continue to shape the future of travel.

Edinburgh Airport’s win is not only a milestone for the facility itself but also an indication of the region’s growing importance as a travel hub. With continued expansion plans and strong industry partnerships, the airport is well-positioned to further enhance Scotland’s connectivity to the world, ensuring that travelers benefit from increased choice and superior service in the years to come.
