Norwegian Cruise Line Announces Major Expansion of Great Stirrup Cay Private Island
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has officially christened its newest ship, Norwegian Aqua, in a vibrant ceremony in Miami. But the real headline-grabber came with the announcement of a massive expansion of Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s exclusive private island in The Bahamas. Set to debut in late 2025, the revamped island experience will coincide with the completion of a brand-new multi-ship pier, enabling easier access and higher guest capacity.
As cruise lines continue enhancing their private destinations, Norwegian Cruise Line is investing in Great Stirrup Cay to meet rising demand and enhance its appeal for guests of all ages.
“These newly announced enhancements to Great Stirrup Cay will further improve the guest experience on the island, which is already one of our top-rated destinations worldwide,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “With a new pier and expanded amenities, we’re making the island more accessible and more exciting for every type of traveler.”
By 2026, Great Stirrup Cay is projected to host over one million annual visitors, and NCL is actively evaluating additional investments to accommodate that growth.
What’s Coming to Great Stirrup Cay in 2025
The upcoming expansion introduces a range of family-friendly and adult-exclusive features:
- New Welcome Center & Island Tram System: Guests will be greeted by a modern welcome pavilion and benefit from a new tram system, making transportation around the island effortless and efficient.
- Oversized Heated Pool with Swim-Up Bar: At the heart of the upgrades lies a spacious, heated pool area featuring swim-up bars, in-water loungers, and premium cabanas. It’s a perfect oasis for adults looking to unwind and enjoy NCL’s beverage packages ashore.
- Kids’ Splash Pad: Families with younger travelers can look forward to a vibrant new splash pad packed with interactive water features and fountains designed to keep children entertained for hours.
- Vibe Beach Club Comes Ashore: NCL is bringing one of its most popular onboard experiences to land. The adults-only Vibe Beach Club, known for its serene ambiance, private cabanas, and elevated service, will now have a home on Great Stirrup Cay.
- Horizon Park for Families: Modeled after similar areas aboard Norwegian Bliss and Breakaway, this outdoor recreation area will include lawn games and open play spaces for all ages.
- Relaxation Zone with Island Vibes: Embracing the laid-back spirit of The Bahamas, the island will feature hammocks, palm-shaded seating, and Tiki-style design elements, perfect for unplugging and soaking in the sun.
