Air New Zealand Unveils First Retro 787‑9 Dreamliner
Air New Zealand has taken delivery of its first upgraded Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner following a 184‑day refurbishment in Singapore to enhance the aircraft’s cabin. The retrofitted aircraft, ZK‑NZH, touched down in Auckland on April 16, 2025, marking the start of a world‑first nose‑to‑tail transformation that will refresh the entire 14‑strong 787‑9 fleet.
According to Air New Zealand’s statement, the overhaul represents the first comprehensive cabin retrofit ever performed on a 787‑9. Executed at the SIA Engineering facility in Singapore, the process involved stripping the interior to its shell and rebuilding every component—from seating areas to galleys and lavatories—to deliver a consistent, modern guest experience.
Air New Zealand Chief Commercial Officer Jeremy O’Brien hailed the arrival as a major milestone. “Seeing the first of our 14 Dreamliners to undergo this transformation arrive home is a huge moment for our people, our customers and the future of Air New Zealand,” he said.
The retrofit delivered all‑new cabin interiors, highlighted by the introduction of the Business Premier Luxe seat, which features a wider shell, deeper recline and increased privacy. Business Premier seats were also redesigned to offer enhanced storage and refined finishes. Premium Economy and Economy cabins received upgraded seat cushions, fresh upholstery and improved ambient lighting.
Before welcoming its first passengers in mid‑May 2025, the aircraft will complete final preparations in Auckland, including testing the new inflight entertainment system and conducting ground trials with crew to refine service protocols. These steps ensure a smooth launch and uphold Air New Zealand’s reputation for reliability and innovation.
A second 787‑9 is currently undergoing the same refurbishment in Singapore, with a total of seven aircraft set to be retrofitted by year‑end. Air New Zealand plans to update its entire 787‑9 fleet of 14 Dreamliners to the new cabin layout by the end of 2026, ensuring consistency and modern comfort across its long‑haul network.
