Holland America Line has announced two special cruises for travelers eager to witness the total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027. The celestial event, which will pass over parts of northern Africa, will be viewable from two Holland America ships positioned at sea to give guests a clear view of the rare phenomenon. The cruise line aims to provide front-row access to the eclipse with optimal viewing conditions, adding another layer of excitement to its already immersive itineraries.

Nieuw Statendam will operate the 28-day “Legendary Solar Eclipse & Cosmic Port Explorer” cruise, departing July 10, 2027. The roundtrip voyage is available from either Rotterdam in the Netherlands or Dover in England and includes visits to 13 ports across Denmark, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, and Morocco. Highlights include overnight stays in Tilbury (London) and Barcelona. On eclipse day, the ship will be positioned off Morocco’s western coast for ideal sky visibility.

Oosterdam will sail a 14-day “Solar Eclipse & Astronomical Discovery” itinerary roundtrip from Piraeus (Athens), Greece, departing July 31, 2027. This voyage will position itself off Tunisia’s eastern coast for the eclipse before continuing on to ports in Tunisia, Malta, Italy, and Greece. Guests will also enjoy an extended port call in Valletta, Malta, as part of the itinerary.

These new 2027 cruises expand Holland America Line’s eclipse-themed offerings, which already include three cruises tied to the 2026 eclipse. According to Paul Grigsby, the cruise line’s vice president of deployment, eclipse cruises continue to draw high interest from both astronomy enthusiasts and leisure travelers. He noted that being at sea gives ships the flexibility to navigate away from cloud cover, greatly enhancing the chance of a clear view. The open horizon also offers an unobstructed look at the approaching and receding eclipse shadow.

In addition to the solar eclipse voyages, Holland America will offer three Northern Lights cruises in 2027 aboard the Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam. These itineraries include an overnight stay in Alta, Norway—renowned as “The City of the Northern Lights”—and feature five days sailing north of the Arctic Circle. Guests can even opt for a wake-up call from the ship’s crew if the aurora borealis is sighted during the night.

With its 2027 eclipse and aurora-focused cruises, Holland America Line is catering to travelers interested in once-in-a-lifetime natural events. These special sailings combine scenic itineraries with extraordinary skywatching opportunities, making them a unique offering for both adventure seekers and science lovers.
