Mexicana Takes Delivery of First E2 Jet for Revival Plan
Mexicana de Aviación has taken delivery of its first Embraer E190-E2 regional jet, marking a major milestone in the state-owned airline’s relaunch strategy. This aircraft is the first of 20 new-generation E2 jets on order—split evenly between the E190-E2 and the larger E195-E2—positioning Mexicana to boost domestic connectivity and modernize its fleet with more efficient, lower-emission aircraft.
The delivery comes exactly one year after the order was announced in June 2024 and kicks off a phased fleet expansion aimed at strengthening the airline’s footprint across Mexico and beyond. The E190-E2 will be configured with 108 seats, while the E195-E2 will carry 132 passengers. Both types feature a single-class 2-by-2 cabin layout with no middle seats, offering a more comfortable travel experience.
“This delivery marks a new chapter for Mexicana,” said Leobardo Bojórquez, CEO of Mexicana. “The E2’s performance, economics, and passenger appeal make it the perfect aircraft to support our growth strategy. We are excited to bring this new level of service and efficiency to our customers.”
Embraer emphasized the E2’s superior fuel efficiency, noting that it offers a 29% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous-generation aircraft. The jets also feature quieter engines, lower emissions, and full fly-by-wire systems that enhance safety and reduce pilot workload. Embraer will provide ongoing support and services to ensure high operational reliability for the fleet.
Mexicana, once Mexico’s flagship carrier, ceased operations in 2010 amid financial collapse. In 2023, the airline was revived by the Mexican government using the logistical and operational support of the Mexican Defence Ministry. Initially flying with Boeing 737-800s leased from the Mexican Air Force, the airline has focused on serving domestic routes with plans for international expansion.
With the E2 fleet coming online, Mexicana is preparing to launch flights to major cities in North and Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. Discussions are underway with several U.S. airports, with targeted destinations including Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Houston, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco.
The arrival of the Embraer E2 jets signals a turning point for Mexicana as it works to re-establish itself in the competitive Latin American aviation market. Combining modern aircraft, government backing, and a legacy brand, the airline is aiming to become a key player once again—offering reliable, efficient service while supporting Mexico’s broader regional and international connectivity goals.
