Cardiff Airport Targets Growth with New Routes

Cardiff Airport (CWL), located just 12 miles from the Welsh capital’s vibrant city center, is experiencing strong momentum as it positions itself for long-term growth. Serving a catchment area of 6.8 million people, the 24/7 airport has no slot constraints and operates 38 direct routes, making it an increasingly attractive hub for both airlines and passengers.
Key airline partner TUI is significantly ramping up its operations at CWL. A second aircraft will be based at the airport for the Winter 2025/26 season, with a fourth to follow in Summer 2026. The expansion will introduce new routes to Hurghada, Faro, and Fuerteventura, while also increasing flight frequencies to popular destinations such as Antalya, Gran Canaria, and Enfidha.
Ryanair is also driving growth at CWL, operating its largest-ever summer schedule with an 18% increase in departures and expanded service to Dublin and Malaga. Meanwhile, Vueling is boosting its commitment to Wales, increasing its Malaga route to five weekly flights starting June 2025.
With Wales seeing the second-highest increase in foreign direct investment among UK regions and welcoming over one million international visitors annually, CWL is well-positioned to scale with the nation’s economic and tourism growth.
The airport is actively seeking to expand its global network and strengthen cargo capabilities. Cardiff Airport’s Routes 360 profile highlights key unserved opportunities including Paris-CDG, Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Barcelona, New York JFK, and Toronto Pearson—providing growth potential for airlines looking to tap into this rising aviation market.
