Virgin Atlantic Launches Major Cabin and Wi-Fi Upgrade

Virgin Atlantic is set to revolutionize its long-haul services with a sweeping transformation that includes fully redesigned cabins, upgraded lounges, and the introduction of free high-speed Wi-Fi powered by Starlink across its fleet by the end of 2027. The announcement was made during a special event in London on July 8, 2025, with CEO Shai Weiss unveiling the airline’s bold vision for the future.
At the core of the transformation is Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience across travel, entertainment, and hospitality. The airline plans to complete a $17 billion fleet modernization by 2028, creating a younger, more efficient fleet of 45 aircraft. These include 19 Airbus A330-900s, 12 Airbus A350-1000s, and 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, all configured to emphasize premium travel. The proportion of Upper Class and Premium seats will increase, reflecting higher demand for upgraded in-flight experiences.
A major highlight is the full cabin retrofit of the Boeing 787-9 fleet, which will begin in 2028 and be completed by 2030. Upper Class seats will expand from 31 to 44, Premium from 35 to 56, and Economy will be reduced to 127 seats. The carrier’s luxurious Retreat Suites, previously only available on the A350-1000 and A330-900, will debut on the 787-9, with eight Retreat Suites in each aircraft.
The airline’s new batch of ten A330neos arriving from late 2026 will feature expanded premium cabins and an updated layout, with 48 Upper Class, 56 Premium, and 128 Economy seats. Four additional Retreat Suites will also be included on these aircraft.
Virgin Atlantic will be the first UK airline to implement Starlink satellite Wi-Fi, offering free, streaming-quality internet to all passengers who register for the Flying Club loyalty program. Installation begins in Q3 2026 and will be completed fleetwide by 2027.
Complementing the onboard enhancements, the airline is also investing in digital innovation with the launch of a new mobile app in December 2025. The app is designed to function as a personal travel assistant, integrating booking, boarding, and holiday planning into a single platform. It will feature a voice-activated concierge powered by OpenAI and Tomoro.ai, making Virgin Atlantic the first European airline to deploy this advanced, multilingual voice technology.
On the ground, Virgin Atlantic will refurbish its Clubhouse lounges at London Heathrow and New York JFK, upgrading the interiors to offer an even more refined experience for Upper Class travelers.
CEO Shai Weiss described the changes as the most significant overhaul since the airline was founded in 1984. He emphasized that every update reflects Virgin Atlantic’s mission to be the most loved travel company, driven by innovation and customer insight.
Chief Experience Officer Siobhan Fitzpatrick echoed this sentiment, stating the airline’s upgrades are designed to meet evolving guest expectations and deliver meaningful, memorable experiences. The transformation marks a new chapter for Virgin Atlantic as it redefines premium travel for a new generation.
