Celebrity Cruises Appoints ‘Captain Kirk’ to Lead Celebrity Xcel

Celebrity Cruises has announced Captain Kyriakos “Kirk” Matragkas as the commanding officer of its newest ship, Celebrity Xcel, set to debut in November 2025. Known affectionately as “Captain Kirk,” Matragkas brings decades of maritime experience and a deep connection to the brand.

Born in Piraeus, Greece, Matragkas was raised around the sea and inspired by his father’s maritime career. He is a graduate of the historic Merchant Marine Academy in Hydra, the world’s oldest marine academy. He joined Celebrity Cruises in 2000 as part of the launch team for Celebrity Millennium, and has since become a familiar and well-respected presence across the fleet.

In a heartfelt video shared by Celebrity Cruises on social media, Matragkas expressed gratitude and emotion upon being asked to take the helm of Celebrity Xcel, wiping away tears as he said, “I’m speechless.”

Celebrity Xcel is the fifth ship in the line’s innovative Edge Series and promises cutting-edge design, world-class amenities, and immersive experiences for guests. The ship will make its maiden voyage from Fort Lauderdale in late 2025.

“Captain Kirk has been an integral part of our fleet for over two decades, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him lead Celebrity Xcel into a new era of luxury cruising,” the cruise line said in a statement.

When not at sea, Matragkas enjoys snowboarding, reading, and playing guitar and drums—hobbies that reflect his dynamic personality both on and off the bridge. His appointment underscores Celebrity’s commitment to leadership rooted in passion and experience.
