Chris Sununu Named President and CEO of Airlines for America

Airlines for America (A4A), the trade association representing leading U.S. airlines, has appointed former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu as its new President and CEO, effective September 9. Sununu succeeds Nick Calio, who is stepping down after 15 years of leadership and will remain CEO Emeritus through the end of the year.
“I am honored to join Airlines for America during this critical moment for an aviation industry that supports over 10 million jobs and serves as a key economic driver in communities across the country,” said Sununu. “I look forward to working with our Board, President Trump and Secretary Duffy, Congress, and other aviation stakeholders to support the ongoing investment and overhaul of our air traffic control infrastructure. Strengthening and modernizing our system is vital for making the safest mode of transportation even safer, more efficient, and globally competitive.”
Sununu served four terms as the 82nd Governor of New Hampshire from 2017 to 2025. During his tenure, he eliminated the Interest & Dividends Tax for retirees, provided tax relief for businesses, cut property taxes by $100 million, expanded public education funding, and introduced voluntary paid family medical leave.
Industry leaders praised his appointment. “The airline industry is one of the most essential enablers of economic growth and cultural connection worldwide. Chris is absolutely the right leader for this crucial industry in the years ahead,” said Scott Kirby, A4A Board Chairman and CEO of United Airlines.
Robert Isom, A4A Board Vice Chair and CEO of American Airlines, added: “Chris has consistently demonstrated strategic vision and operational expertise. At this pivotal moment for U.S. aviation, he’s the right leader for A4A. I also want to thank Nick Calio for his outstanding leadership and lasting contributions to the industry.”
Calio, who joined A4A in 2011, led the association through a rebranding and positioned it as one of the most influential voices shaping airline policy and regulation in Washington.
With Sununu’s appointment, A4A aims to strengthen advocacy on key industry issues, including safety, sustainability, competitiveness, and modernization of the U.S. air traffic control system.
