August’s Biggest Hotel and Resort Updates

August brought major developments across the hospitality sector, from exciting new resort openings to shifting financial forecasts among leading hotel brands.
In the Dominican Republic, Secrets Playa Esmeralda is set to open September 1 as an adults-only, all-inclusive resort featuring 500 suites, swim-up rooms, 11 dining venues, and a full-service spa. Also in Punta Cana, W Hotels launched its first all-inclusive property, offering 340 rooms, 12 restaurants, and expansive leisure facilities. Playa del Carmen welcomed the debut of Devossion by Live Aqua, a lifestyle-focused brand with events-driven programming, set for full opening in October. In Florida, The Garden Hotel & Resort will debut October 1 in Fort Lauderdale, transforming the former Royal Beach Palace into a 155-room all-inclusive retreat with both adults-only and pet-friendly options.
On the business side, Marriott revised its financial outlook downward, citing stagnant revenue growth in the U.S. and Canada, though it reported a 5% RevPAR increase in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Hyatt surpassed analysts’ expectations in Q2, boosted by its acquisition of Playa Hotels & Resorts and a 9.5% year-over-year increase in fee revenue.
Brand changes also made headlines, with Blue Diamond Resorts rebranding to Royalton Hotels & Resorts, consolidating names under a stronger identity. Planet Hollywood properties now carry the “by Royalton” tag. Meanwhile, Posadas announced plans to expand its portfolio with 1,300 new rooms across Mexico and the Caribbean by year’s end, including the upcoming Fiesta Americana Funeeq Punta Cana.
AIC Hotel Group also introduced a new host agency sales department, reinforcing its commitment to travel advisors.
