Missing Carnival Passenger Chose to Stay Ashore

A Carnival Cruise Line passenger who went missing in Bonaire earlier this month appears to have intentionally stayed behind, according to the cruise operator.

Jessica Collins, a 47-year-old American traveler sailing aboard Carnival Horizon, failed to return to the ship on September 17 after going ashore. The vessel later departed the island as scheduled, leaving local authorities and the cruise line to investigate her absence.

Carnival stated that Collins appeared to have taken “deliberate action to be alone and on her own.” She reportedly left her stateroom with personal belongings packed into her backpack and placed a cash tip along with a thank-you note for her attendant before disembarking.

In a statement shared with media, the line explained that Collins later texted a member of Carnival’s Care Team, assuring them she was safe but did not wish to be located or contacted further.

Despite this, officials in Bonaire, including the Port Authority, the Public Entity of Bonaire, and the Tourism Corporation Bonaire, have expressed their concern and continue efforts to confirm her wellbeing. Authorities noted their priority remains to find Collins “quickly and safely,” even as her messages suggest she may not want assistance.

The unusual case highlights the complexities faced when passengers choose to leave ships voluntarily during port calls. While cruise lines maintain safety protocols and communication measures, responsibility ultimately rests with the traveler once they disembark.
