China, US Close to Major Boeing Jet Order

China and the United States are reportedly nearing a landmark agreement for the purchase of up to 500 Boeing aircraft, in what could become one of the largest commercial jet deals in aviation history. U.S. Ambassador to China David Purdue told Reuters that negotiations had entered their “final days or weeks,” signaling progress after years of stalled sales.

Congressman Adam Smith, who recently led a bipartisan delegation to Beijing, emphasized the significance of the talks. “It has been a while since Boeing airplanes have been sold here in China. We would like to get that deal done,” he said. Purdue added that the agreement carries great importance for President Donald Trump, both economically and diplomatically.

If finalized, the deal would be the biggest ever for Chinese carriers, surpassing the 2022 record when airlines in the country placed a 292-aircraft order for Airbus A320 family jets. It would also mark Boeing’s first major order from China since 2017, providing a much-needed boost for the U.S. manufacturer, which continues to face production challenges and global competition.

Reports suggest that major Chinese carriers, including China Southern, Air China, China Eastern, Xiamen Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines, could divide the order. However, Chinese airlines often keep purchase details private until deliveries are underway, making it difficult to fully track backlogs.

Beyond its commercial impact, the potential Boeing order is viewed as a step toward easing U.S.-China trade tensions, strengthening ties between two of the world’s largest aviation markets.
