Sam Altman: ChatGPT to Offer Erotic Mode for Verified Adults

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will soon become “more friendly”—including the return of adult and erotic conversations for verified users. The move, part of a broader effort to “treat adult users like adults,” marks a significant policy shift as OpenAI prepares to introduce age verification and more flexible content moderation.
Altman shared the update on X, saying that OpenAI will roll out new permissions in December 2025, allowing verified adult users to engage in mature and erotic dialogue with ChatGPT. He emphasized that this update follows user feedback calling for more expressive and less restrictive interactions. “We’re going to treat adult users like adults,” Altman wrote, noting that the changes will apply only to users who pass the new verification system.
The decision reflects OpenAI’s evolving approach to content regulation. Over the past year, the company had implemented strict filters to prevent sexually explicit material and emotionally suggestive content, leading to criticism that ChatGPT had become overly sanitized. Altman acknowledged that these limits, while intended to ensure safety, sometimes made the AI feel distant or robotic. The new policy aims to restore personalization, empathy, and conversational depth without compromising user protection.
According to OpenAI, the rollout will coincide with improvements to tone and personality customization. Users will be able to set preferences for how expressive, playful, or serious the chatbot behaves, creating a more natural conversational experience. For verified adults, that may include romantic or sensual contexts within responsible boundaries.
Altman stressed that OpenAI remains committed to safety, especially for vulnerable users. Conversations related to mental health, abuse, or underage content will continue to be handled with heightened safeguards and restrictions. “We are not the moral police,” Altman said, reiterating that the goal is not to push explicit content but to give adults the choice to explore mature topics responsibly.
The announcement has sparked debate within the tech community. Some experts welcome the change as a step toward authenticity and user autonomy, while others caution that moderation and verification systems must be airtight to prevent misuse. As OpenAI redefines its boundaries, ChatGPT’s upcoming “adult mode” could reshape how AI interacts with users—and how society defines intimacy in the digital age.
