For travelers and advisors seeking river journeys that feel both personal and deeply immersive, AmaWaterways is setting an ambitious course for 2026 and 2027. With new ships, enrichment-driven itineraries, and expanded destinations, the cruise line is introducing experiences designed to foster meaningful connections with cultures, landscapes, and moments that linger long after the voyage ends.

One of the most anticipated launches is AmaSofia, debuting in March 2026. The new ship will initially sail the Rhine River before transitioning to the Danube from June through the end of the year. Featuring AmaWaterways’ signature twin-balcony staterooms, guests can enjoy both French and outside balconies while passing through highlights such as the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge and iconic cities including Budapest, Bratislava, and Vienna. Contemporary design and thoughtful comfort define the onboard experience, creating a refined yet relaxed setting for river exploration.

AmaWaterways is also expanding its enrichment-focused collaboration with Smithsonian Journeys, offering river cruises curated for intellectually curious travelers. These itineraries sail along the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhône, with the Mekong River joining the collection in 2027. Each sailing is hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys Experts—ranging from historians and archaeologists to artists—who provide lectures, discussions, and exclusive access ashore. Experiences such as viewing Rembrandt’s The Night Watch at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum or exploring Melk Abbey’s medieval manuscripts with a resident librarian are seamlessly integrated into the journey.

Beginning in August 2026, AmaWaterways will further broaden its global footprint with expanded Africa safaris and wildlife cruises. New itineraries venture into Kenya, Namibia, and Tanzania, combining land-based safaris with river cruising. Each journey includes a three-night Chobe River cruise aboard the Zambezi Queen, followed by a stay at Victoria Falls. Highlights range from penguin encounters near Cape Town to safaris in Etosha National Park, the Greater Kruger region, and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, with optional extensions to destinations such as Johannesburg and Zanzibar.

Rounding out the new offerings is the Magical Christmas Markets of Germany itinerary, debuting in December 2027. Sailing between Nuremberg and Frankfurt, the cruise immerses guests in festive traditions at renowned markets including Wiesbaden’s Sternschnuppenmarkt and Frankfurt’s historic Altstadt. Guided tours and regional culinary tastings bring seasonal culture to life.

Together, these new journeys reinforce AmaWaterways’ focus on curated experiences that balance comfort, culture, and discovery—offering advisors compelling options and travelers unforgettable ways to explore the world by river.
