A Delta Air Lines flight from Houston to Atlanta made an emergency landing early Wednesday Feb. 18 after a passenger caused a disturbance shortly after departure, prompting the crew to request security assistance.

Delta Flight 2557, operated by a Boeing 717, departed Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport with 85 passengers and five crew members on board. Within minutes of takeoff, the pilot declared an emergency and requested law enforcement meet the aircraft upon its return.

According to radio communications captured by Broadcastify, the pilot told air traffic control that a passenger had stood up and attempted to access the cockpit area. The cockpit door remained secure, and the individual was restrained by the crew and other passengers.

The pilot also requested medical personnel after reporting that the disruptive passenger had assaulted another traveler during the incident. The aircraft signaled an emergency via its transponder and returned to Hobby Airport approximately 17 minutes after departure.

Emergency vehicles escorted the aircraft to the gate, where police were waiting. The passenger was taken into custody upon arrival.

In a later statement, Delta said the individual “approached crew and customers but did not make contact with or attempt to access the flight deck.” The airline emphasized that safety is its top priority and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward unruly behavior. Delta also apologized to passengers for the disruption.

The flight subsequently departed Houston again and arrived in Atlanta roughly 90 minutes behind schedule.

According to Federal Aviation Administration data, there were 1,621 reported unruly passenger incidents in 2025. So far in 2026, 126 cases have been recorded.

The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.
