ITA Airways Joins Star Alliance, Expands Global Reach

ITA Airways has officially joined Star Alliance, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s growth strategy and strengthening global connectivity for travelers. The move integrates the Italian carrier into the world’s largest airline alliance, expanding its reach and enhancing passenger experience across international markets.
The induction was formalized during a ceremony at Rome Fiumicino Airport, attended by senior executives including ITA Airways CEO Joerg Eberhart and Star Alliance CEO Theo Panagiotoulias. Effective April 1, ITA Airways is now fully connected to the alliance’s global network, linking its key hubs in Rome and Milan with more than 1,150 destinations worldwide.
For passengers, the integration delivers immediate benefits. Travelers can now access seamless connections across member airlines, including through check-in, coordinated schedules, and streamlined baggage handling. Frequent flyers will also gain reciprocal loyalty benefits, allowing them to earn and redeem miles across the network while enjoying access to Star Alliance lounges globally.
The addition of ITA Airways strengthens connectivity across Italy and Southern Europe, enhancing links between regional destinations and long-haul international markets. The airline contributes more than 350 daily flights to the alliance, supported by a strong domestic and regional network that improves access to key Italian cities and beyond.
The integration has been closely supported by Lufthansa Group, which holds a 41% stake in ITA Airways. Collaboration between the two organizations has enabled a rapid and coordinated onboarding process, aligning systems, services, and customer offerings with alliance standards. This partnership is expected to unlock additional synergies, particularly in network planning, commercial strategy, and premium service offerings.
For Star Alliance, the inclusion of ITA Airways increases its membership to 26 airlines and reinforces its presence in one of Europe’s most important travel markets. The alliance now offers more than 17,500 daily flights across a network spanning over 190 countries, providing extensive global coverage.
Strategically, the move positions ITA Airways to compete more effectively on the international stage. By leveraging alliance connectivity, the airline can offer broader route options, improved service consistency, and enhanced customer value. At the same time, it brings its distinct Italian identity and service approach into the alliance, adding diversity to the network.
The development underscores the continued importance of airline alliances in delivering seamless global travel, as carriers seek scale, efficiency, and stronger competitive positioning in an evolving aviation landscape.
