US airlines improved their fuel efficiency by more than 135% between 1978 and 2021 through “unrelenting efforts over decades to improve the sustainability of our industry,” writes Tim Pohle, vice president of environmental affairs at Airlines for America. However, sustainable aviation fuel is the key to moving forward and long-term government support is crucial to give producers the certainty they need to ramp up the supply. “More must be done to ensure that commercial-scale quantities of sustainable feedstocks are available, there is adequate infrastructure to transport and process these feedstocks and, ultimately, get SAF in our fuel tanks,” Pohle writes.
