Aalborg Airport has Big Ambitions for the Future

August 2022 showed a continued high demand for travels to and from Aalborg Airport as well as a business community that is once again gearing up after the summer holidays. As a result, there was a far greater number of domestic travelers in August than in the previous month, corresponding to an impressive 26.5 percent increase compared to August 2019.

The joyfull holiday atmosphere in August was evident at Aalborg Airport, when the travelers traveled to, among others, the Turkish south coast, Crete, Mallorca or across Denmark to Copenhagen and Bornholm. All in all, 131,664 traveled to and from Aalborg Airport in August 2022 – an increase of 4.2 percent compared to the passenger level in August 2019.

One-stop to the world with Denmark’s largest domestic route

With 76,221 travelers to and from Copenhagen and Bornholm in August 2022, we have to go all the way back to 2011 to see a higher number of domestic travelers in a similar month – an achievement that seems set to hold for all of 2022.

– For many months now, we have seen domestic traffic significantly exceed the 2019 level, and this also applies to August. This is the result of several things, including three well-established airlines on the route to Copenhagen, competitive ticket prices and great travel flexibility. The latter is particularly important for business and leisure travelers who use Copenhagen as a HUB for travels to for example overseas destinations. We also see that more people have traveled via Copenhagen amid the challenges Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has faced. This is a result of a reduced number of daily KLM departures throughout the month, where travelers in some cases had to find an alternative. But we look forward to a stable number of departures to Amsterdam for the rest of the summer season, where we have three fixed daily departures in the winter season, says airport director Niels Hemmingsen.

Focus on more direct travel experiences from Aalborg Airport

Every year in August, Aalborg Airport hosts a conference for airlines and travel agencies, who cooperate and focus on creating more travel opportunities from Aalborg. In 2022, the airline and agency attendance exceeded previous years significantly, which provided fertile ground for new collaborations and new direct routes.

– Reaching the same passenger level as in 2019 was a milestone for a long time, but it should be seen as a result of the desire to reach much further than that, corresponding to the great potential we know Aalborg Airport to have. At the moment, the amount of direct foreign flights and charter routes cannot match the desire to travel and the demand that we have seen during the summer. The airlines and travel companies are also aware of this when we, as an airport, talk to them. Therefore, Aalborg Development Forum is an important event that provides solutions to the possibilities, which I believe will result in new and exciting travel destinations, concludes Niels Hemmingsen.
