Aerounión Rebrands as Avianca Cargo México to Boost Reach

Aerounión has officially rebranded as Avianca Cargo México, the company announced, marking a strategic move to strengthen its global connectivity and align more closely with the Avianca Cargo network.

The rebranding aims to integrate the Mexican cargo airline into the broader logistics capabilities of Avianca Cargo and its parent company, Avianca Airlines. Despite the name change, the airline confirmed that its business structure, operational permits, and governance remain unchanged. Avianca Cargo México will continue to operate independently under Mexican aviation regulations.

Avianca Holdings has held an undisclosed minority stake in Aerounión since 2014 through its subsidiary TAMPA Cargo, now operating as Avianca Cargo. This long-standing partnership has evolved into deeper brand alignment, especially as both carriers pursue fleet modernization and expanded service capabilities.

Avianca Cargo México operates a fleet of two Airbus A330-300 freighters (P2F), the newest of which was delivered on June 20, 2025. The airline recently phased out its aging Boeing 767-200 and A300-600 freighters to adopt a younger, standardized fleet, mirroring Avianca Cargo’s move to an all-Airbus cargo fleet, which currently includes six A330-200Fs.

The rebranding is part of a larger strategy to enhance logistics efficiency, regional cooperation, and cargo service offerings across Latin America and beyond. However, due to Mexican regulations, foreign ownership in local airlines remains capped at 49%, meaning Avianca Holdings continues to hold a minority position in the newly named carrier.

Avianca Cargo México says the change will help drive growth while preserving operational autonomy.
