Air New Zealand Hosts Special Panoramic Flight for Sick Children
Air New Zealand conducted a heartwarming panoramic flight over the South Island on Aug. 25, offering a unique experience for 50 children with various medical conditions. This special flight, designated NZ8477, showcased the stunning landscapes of New Zealand while providing a memorable outing for these young passengers.
The charter flight was organized in collaboration with Koru Care, a charitable organization dedicated to creating special moments for children undergoing medical treatments. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which typically serves international routes, took off from Christchurch Airport (CHC) and embarked on a scenic journey over the South Island. The flight path included a southern leg over central regions, a turn eastward near Queenstown, and a northern route along the East Coast before returning to Christchurch after approximately 1.5 hours.
During the flight, the children received VIP treatment and were greeted onboard by Air New Zealand’s CEO, Greg Moran. Prior to departure, they enjoyed a pre-flight celebration at Christchurch Airport, themed ‘Around the World in a Day.’ The party featured food and activities representing some of Air New Zealand’s international destinations, including New York, Tokyo, Fiji, and Sydney. Each child also received a certificate naming a star in the sky after them, adding a personal touch to the event.
In addition to the special flight experience, Air New Zealand emphasized its commitment to environmental responsibility. The airline announced that it would offset the carbon emissions from the flight through the purchase of carbon credits and a contribution to a biodiversity promotion program.
This initiative is part of Air New Zealand’s long-standing tradition of hosting special flights in partnership with Koru Care. For over 40 years, these flights have provided unforgettable experiences for children, showcasing the airline’s dedication to making a positive impact on the community.
Air New Zealand operates a fleet of 14 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, primarily on international long-haul routes from Auckland (AKL). The use of this aircraft for a domestic panoramic flight over the South Island was a rare and special occurrence, highlighting the airline’s commitment to both its passengers and its community.
