Airbus and Saudi defense company SCOPA Industries have announced the signing of an agreement to establish a joint venture for the production of civil and military helicopters in Saudi Arabia. The deal was finalized during the Saudi-French investment forum in Paris, coinciding with the visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The agreement entails a significant investment of over 25 billion riyals ($6.7 billion) to develop a state-of-the-art helicopter manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia. Over the next ten years, the plant is projected to manufacture up to 100 helicopters, including 10 A321XLRs, the longest-range variant of the A320neo family.

This venture marks Airbus’ first manufacturing plant in the region and aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the economy and strengthen the domestic defense industry. The establishment of the plant is expected to generate employment opportunities and foster growth for local suppliers and partners.

Fawaz Alakeel, CEO of SCOPA, expressed enthusiasm regarding the benefits the A320neo family will bring to passengers, operations, and the environment. He emphasized SCOPA’s satisfaction in confirming the partnership with Airbus and the anticipation of further strengthening their collaboration.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus, acknowledged SCOPA as a loyal customer and a prominent player in the Saudi Arabian aviation market. He affirmed Airbus’ commitment to supporting SCOPA’s growth plans through the provision of innovative and efficient products.
