US airlines are preparing to implement the Department of Transportation’s new federal rules on traveling by air with service animals, which goes into effect on Jan. 11. Airlines have applauded the DOT’s decision to align the definition of service animals with the Department of Justice’s definition under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which classifies services animals as dogs that have been “individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability.” Ray Prentice, Alaska Airlines’ director of customer advocacy explained, “This regulatory change is welcome news, as it will help us reduce disturbances onboard while continuing to accommodate our guests traveling with qualified service animals.”
