Portugal’s ANA Airports Handle Record 68.4 Million Travelers in 2024

ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, a key member of the Vinci Airports network, set a new passenger record in 2024, handling 68.4 million travelers across its ten-airport system—surpassing pre-pandemic levels and cementing its role in driving Portugal’s tourism economy. Lisbon Airport alone accounted for over 36 million passengers, reinforcing its position as a major European hub. In contrast, the Azores’ regional airports each welcomed around 100,000 travelers, highlighting ANA’s successful integration of hub-and-spoke operations.

With more than 90% of inbound tourism arriving by air, ANA’s airport infrastructure remains central to Portugal’s economic activity, spanning from the mainland to the island territories. On May 16, TAP Air Portugal launched a new long-haul service between Lisbon and Los Angeles, the airline’s ninth North American destination. This move expands Lisbon’s transatlantic network and strengthens its role as a global transfer hub. TAP’s 14 existing routes to Brazil further solidify its role in Portugal’s intercontinental connectivity.

Porto Airport also expanded its international reach in summer 2025. New services include TAP’s four-weekly Boston flights (starting May 14), Air Canada’s thrice-weekly Montreal route (launching June 5), and new links from Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa and Azul Airlines to São Paulo/Viracopos and Recife. United Airlines has added seasonal nonstop flights to New York from both Madeira and Faro airports, further enhancing ANA’s North American connectivity.

At Routes Europe in Seville, ANA Aviation Director Nuno Costa emphasized the importance of in-person networking to build airline partnerships. “Routes is where you need to be—not just to develop business cases, but to talk to people,” Costa said, pointing to the event’s value in expanding air service networks.

Each ANA airport follows a customized development plan based on local market demand and revenue potential. These strategies include targeted airline incentives and co-marketing initiatives supported by Turismo de Portugal, ANA’s public-private tourism partner. Their joint efforts recently earned the Routes Awards Destination category.

Through its Routes 360 membership, ANA maintains regular profile updates and proactive communication to highlight new air service opportunities and its record-breaking performance. Looking ahead, ANA plans to double down on transatlantic expansion and resume connections to Asia, driven by data, strategic partnerships, and a hands-on approach to airline relations.
