American Airlines is expanding its regional fleet by leasing 14 Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen aircraft to its regional subsidiary, PSA Airlines, which operates under the American Eagle brand. Announced on October 22, 2024, this strategic move will see the CRJ900s integrated into PSA’s operations, enabling the airline to bolster its regional service offerings and improve passenger amenities.

The phased introduction of the 14 CRJ900s begins this month, with each aircraft to undergo conversion to a 76-seat, dual-class configuration. The updated configuration aligns with American Airlines’ regional service standards, offering both economy and premium seating options for passengers. Additionally, the CRJ900s will be fitted with high-speed satellite Wi-Fi, providing gate-to-gate connectivity and enhanced browsing speeds throughout the flight.

PSA Airlines’ President and CEO, Dion Flannery, emphasized the significance of the CRJ900 expansion in line with the airline’s growth strategy. “PSA is on a well-planned growth trajectory that involves more team members flying more aircraft and serving more customers as we continue to expand and enhance our operation,” Flannery stated. He also highlighted PSA’s recent milestones, noting, “This year, we fully restored staffing, returned all our parked aircraft to service, and inducted the last of seven aircraft from a prior agreement. Now, we’re ready for the next phase of growth with these 14 NextGen CRJ900s.”

The addition of the CRJ900s will increase PSA Airlines’ capacity and operational flexibility, allowing it to meet the growing demand for regional air travel. Each of these aircraft brings advancements in fuel efficiency and reliability, contributing to PSA’s goal of efficient and sustainable operations. The new aircraft are expected to improve customer experience by offering enhanced cabin comfort and faster in-flight connectivity, a feature increasingly in demand among passengers.

Flannery expressed optimism about the expansion, describing it as a promising development for the regional airline industry. “It’s an exciting time to be part of the regional airline industry, and with our continued growth – from departures to customers served to the number of aircraft we operate – it’s an even more exciting and promising time to be with PSA,” he said.

PSA Airlines, with a current fleet size of 141 aircraft, operates a mix of Bombardier CRJ700 and CRJ900 aircraft. Currently, the airline has 61 CRJ700s and 80 CRJ900s. The addition of the new CRJ900s will further strengthen PSA’s role within American Eagle’s regional network, allowing for more frequent service on established routes and potentially new routes that align with regional demand.

This strategic fleet expansion marks an important milestone in American Airlines’ commitment to regional air service and its long-term partnership with PSA Airlines. With the added CRJ900s, PSA Airlines is better positioned to meet American Eagle’s service goals, providing customers with more regional travel options, enhanced in-flight comfort, and high-speed connectivity. This expansion supports American Airlines’ broader strategy of strengthening its regional footprint and meeting the increasing needs of passengers seeking reliable and convenient travel options across American Eagle’s extensive network.
