American Airlines Launches Anti-Trafficking Training Program

Thousands of American Airlines employees will soon be receiving specialized training to better identify potential human trafficking cases and assist in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The move comes as the U.S. carrier joins the federal government’s Blue Lightning Initiative (BLI), reinforcing its longstanding commitment to combating human trafficking in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

Working closely with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP), American Airlines will integrate tailored training into its existing programs. This new effort will educate flight attendants, pilots, customer service representatives, and various other team members on recognizing the indicators of human trafficking and taking the appropriate actions if they suspect any wrongdoing.

“The Blue Lightning Initiative is a key element in the federal government’s fight against the scourge of human trafficking,” said Gary Tomasulo, American’s Vice President of Corporate Security. He emphasized that American Airlines has a long history of partnering with law enforcement to counteract human trafficking, and this new training program deepens that partnership. By arming its employees with the necessary tools to detect and report suspicious activities, the airline aims to play a crucial role in a nationwide effort to reduce the incidence of trafficking in the aviation sector.

The training provided under the Blue Lightning Initiative will build on American Airlines’ robust existing human trafficking awareness efforts. Currently, the carrier trains upwards of 70,000 employees annually on identifying human trafficking indicators and proper reporting protocols. Prior to joining BLI, American was a partner with the Blue Campaign, an initiative that now forms part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Countering Human Trafficking. The Blue Campaign has been a national public awareness effort designed to educate the general public, law enforcement, and industry partners about human trafficking since 2010.

Julie Abraham, Director of the DOT’s Office of International Transportation and Trade, highlighted the significance of the partnership. “The U.S. Department of Transportation is proud to partner with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and American Airlines to train aviation personnel on how to recognize indicators of and report human trafficking suspicions. This partnership highlights the commitment of airlines to combat human trafficking in the aviation sector and spread awareness among the traveling public.” Her remarks underscore the broader role that airlines can play in ensuring passenger safety and supporting national security objectives.

The training initiative comes during National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a period dedicated to raising awareness and mobilizing communities to fight against the exploitation of over 27.6 million individuals worldwide, including within the United States. American Airlines’ participation in the Blue Lightning Initiative represents a proactive approach to addressing a critical global issue, ensuring that its employees are equipped to respond swiftly and effectively to potential trafficking incidents.

As the airline implements these enhanced training protocols, it sends a strong message about corporate responsibility and the vital role of aviation personnel in safeguarding human dignity. By educating its 70,000-strong workforce on human trafficking indicators, American Airlines not only helps protect vulnerable populations but also sets a high standard for the industry as a whole.
