American Airlines pilots vote for potential strike action
The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing 15,000 pilots at American Airlines, has conducted a strike authorization vote, with over 99% of participating members voting in favor of a potential strike.
The APA membership is looking for a new contract, as well as changes to scheduling and work practices. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom has stated that the company will match rival Delta Air Lines’ pilots’ approved four-year deal, including a 34% pay raise and other improvements.
Pilots will need permission from the federal National Mediation Board to strike.
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) has also opened voting on a strike authorization, following three years of negotiations with the company. The vote will run until May 31, with strong voter turnout and positive responses so far.
SWAPA President Casey Murray stated that the decision to authorize a strike was not taken lightly, but was deemed necessary due to a lack of accountability and leadership from the airline’s executives.
