Beverly Bass, American Airlines’ first female captain, recounted her experiences when her crew was on one of many flights forced to land their aircraft in Gander, Newfoundland, after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. This event forms the plot of the musical “Come From Away.” “We walked into the terminal, and it was just lined with tables with enormous amounts of food, and because it was so early in the morning, it told me every stove in Gander had been on all night long,” Bass said.
